Shampoo bars have become the new ‘go to’ in the war on plastic waste and in all honesty I’ve always been dubious as to how well they work for your hair as well as the environment! The Shine shampoo bar sets high expectations having been created by Jonathan, a hairdresser with 30 years of experience, and being 99% naturally derived!
First of all I should tell you, my hair is thick and fairly unruly! I am the client in the salon that gets ‘Oooh isn’t your hair thick, you’ll never go bald!’ or the hairdresser stops to rest their arms half way through my ‘bouncy blow’! I colour my roots every 4 weeks to bring them back to brown from silver [thanks for those genes, Dad!] and with regular gym & running my hair takes a bit of a rough ride. I’ve always been conscious of what I use & make sure I use products which the manageability. So how would the shampoo bar cope with this mane!?
The packaging is lovely, in a small silver tin which is very compact & perfect for the bathroom cupboard amongst all those other essentials! This could easily also sit in the shower or on the side of the bath without looking out of place. The bar itself fits well in the palm of your hand and the tin is the perfect way to transport, I’d definitely pop this into my suitcase over a bottle full! There is a nice citrus scent, not too strong but very natural & fresh.
I used the bar after 2 consecutive days of running in the heat! The instructions told me to rub the bar against my head to create a foam and disperse the shampoo across my scalp. It was surprising to me how quickly the shampoo was released once it was wet, much easier than expected. After a lather and scrub & rinse I re applied the bar for a second time, once would be sufficient but with thick hair I always shampoo twice to make sure it is really fresh. The shampoo rinsed out really easily & there was no residue left. On blow drying my hair after, it felt really clean and smooth too. I was really pleased with how my hair felt, it wasn’t heavy at all!
I took the bar on a weekend away in an attempt not to fill my case with bottle of shampoo. It takes up way less space, there’s no worries about the liquid limit in luggage & the dish it comes in works to store as well as a holder when washing your hair!
Final Thoughts
If I were to buy the bar I’d be more likely to use it for weekends away and holidays, mainly because I use specific haircare at home which I find works really well but I don’t want to carry it around! My only concern with the bar is it is difficult to measure how much you are using each wash unlike when you have the guidance of a ‘walnut size’ of shampoo to follow! Having said that I think the shampoo bar will last a long time and I’d have no reservations about spending my money on this product!
