If you are looking for a vegan-friendly protein shake made from real food that tastes delicious, then Puriton might be the protein powder for you. This week I’ve been sampling their vegan range of shakes and have found them truly delicious!
About Puriton
This Shropshire-based company prides itself on creating shakes from ‘real food’. It is produced in small batches, with locally sourced ingredients wherever possible.
Flavour not Flavourings
Puriton believe that there is a big difference between flavour and flavouring. That is why they focus on using authentic ingredients. The strawberry flavour in their mix comes from real strawberries and not strawberry flavouring. The Vanilla is made with Madagascan vanilla pods. There are no artificial sweeteners or flavourings.
The vegan range includes Chai Latte, Banana, Chocolate and Hazelnut, Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla, Almond, Beetroot, Beetroot and Chocolate, Coffee and Walnut, Chocolate Orange, Coconut, Raspberry, Blackcurrant and Pistachio – yum!
I tried the Strawberry and the Chocolate and Hazelnut and both were really tasty. Neither had that ‘protein shake’ chalky flavour that I associate with most protein shakes I’ve tried.
What’s in them?
The strawberry ingredients included a vegan protein blend of pea, rice and hemp protein, golden flaxseed, sunflower kernels, freeze dried strawberries, almonds, coconut, chia, pumpkin and sesame seeds, nutritional yeast, psyllium husk and apple pectin.
The Chocolate and Hazelnut ingredients include the same vegan protein blend, golden flaxseed, sunflower kernels, hazelnuts, coconut, cocoa, almonds, chia, pumpkin and sesame seeds, nutritional yeast, psyllium husk and apple pectin.
Both come in at around 190 calories and 14.5g of protein (before milk).
I mixed the powder with oat milk in my Nutribullet to make sure it was properly combined. In addition to the powder, I have to admit that I blitzed some frozen banana in with both shakes I was using them as a meal substitute and as I’m breastfeeding at the moment I feared the shake alone wouldn’t keep me going until dinnertime! I did also have to have some fruit and a handful of nuts later in the day, so I imagine if you are also working out (or also breastfeeding) then this won’t act as a meal replacement alone. That said, they were delicious and I’m keen to try some of the other vegan flavours.
Not just vegan options
Puriton also include shakes for diabetic, paleo, low carb and gluten free diets. You can find out more about these on their website.
