I love veggie sushi and this week, for the first time, I enjoyed making my own with the Yo! Sushi Rolling Kit.
Sushi Rolling Kit and Noodle Bowl set
As part of Yo!’s Christmas store, you can buy the Sushi Rolling Kit, which includes a bamboo rolling mat, sushi rice, chopsticks, nori sheets, sushi rice vinegar, soy sauce, ginger wasabi (although the wasabi was missing from my set) and a How To guide.
As part of my pack I was also sent some additional wasabi peas and spicy coated peanuts, which made for excellent snacking while we rolled the sushi! I was also sent the beautiful noodle bowl set (although sadly one of the bowls was broken on arrival).
Making delicious vegan sushi
The How To guide was particularly useful in terms of cooking the rice to perfection, to give you just the right amount of sticky-ness for successful sushi. Our guide was in the wrong order, so we had to jump between pages to figure out which instructions went with which recipe. However, we didn’t let this stop us as we set to making delicious sushi rolls and hand folded pockets.
As we’re vegan, we adapted the recipes using smoked tofu, avocado, carrots, peppers, cucumber and vegan mayo alongside the recommended ginger, soy sauce and sesame seeds.
It was really fun to make different combinations and to try different rolls, including the tricky roll with the rice on the outside of the nori.
The rolls were all delicious and it was an excellent first foray into sushi making. They were also surprisingly filling! We made four large rolled and two half hand rolls from the rice in our pack.
Overall thoughts
I really liked the kit and would recommend it particularly for a date night or evening with a friend as an entertaining supper. I would also recommend adding some wasabi peas and peanuts to your order for snacking during the preparation time! While there were a few snags (the missing wasabi and instruction booklet in the wrong order) on the whole it was a really fun and tasty experience.
The noodle bowls are lovely (although sadly I only have one now) so perhaps it’s best not to risk a breakable order by post.
Vegan Japanese Festive ‘Chicken’ Christmas feat box
We were also treated to the Vegan Japanese Festive ‘Chicken’ Christmas feast box. This included vegan nuggets, hot and sticky Korean dipping sauce, Yo! Fries, Miso-Butter Sweetcorn and vegan coleslaw.
Alongside this we were sent a selection of vegan sushi including the avocado maki, inari taco (Golden tofu pockets filled with rice, avocado, ponzu salsa and vegan sriracha mayo), kaiso seaweed and yasai rolls (Inari, avocado, cucumber, cos lettuce and carrot roll, topped with teriyaki and vegan mayo).
The vegan JFC box was tasty and the portions were really big (neither me or my husband managed to finish). I’m not normally a big chip eater, but the sauce on the Yo! fries was pretty more-ish! I would have enjoyed more of the slaw (which was really tasty) and fewer nuggets, but overall it was an indulgent (although likely one-off) treat.
The sushi was delicious, particularly the inari tacos. I would definitely order again from the Yo! vegan menu to try more of their vegan treats.
