Have you heard of Wing Shack? I first heard of them at work and wondered what all the hype about these chicken wings was about. When I finally tried them I wasn’t disappointed and could see why they were a firm favourite for so many.
Who are Wing Shack?
Wing Shack was founded in Loughton in 2017 by three friends with a passion for good quality food. They now have locations across London in Clerkenwell, Canary Wharf, Camden and Bethnal Green.
A little background on how Wing Shack started and the values behind the company. One of the founders, Josh Jarvis spent a short amount of time in prison (for perverting the course of justice) but he turned this experience into something positive. He spent his time in prison counselling many young convicts to help them prepare for life beyond jail. He is now involved in two charities: The Right Course – spearheaded by Fred Sirieix, The Right Course seeks to transform staff restaurants in prisons into high street like restaurants. Only a Pavement Away – which looks to employ ex-offenders and homeless people into the hospitality sector.
After the pandemic, Jarvis has said that Wing Shack will be aiming to employ ex-offenders.
Adapting during a global pandemic
During 2020 many companies, including restaurants, have suffered immensely. I continue to be impressed at how many business have adapted in the circumstances they were faced with. Wing Shack is included in this. I was interested to see the recent addition of meal kits to their menu and was lucky enough to be sent one to try.
The meal kit
The meal kit was delivered by courier, in a sealed box which was lined with a wool material with ice packs to keep fresh.
The contents included:
- 1.5kg fresh chicken wings
- Wing Shack Co Jarv’s tangy buffalo and Changs honey and sesame sauce
- Chives
- Toasted white sesame seeds
- Spring onion
- Recipe cards
- Allergen report
- 4 Wing Shack Co bibs (because you know you can get messy with wings!)
You get 4 recipe cards in total, which included 2 for the buffalo and 2 for the honey and sesame, 1 baked option and 1 fried option. I don’t own a fryer so went for the baked option.
The instructions were super easy to follow. You basically bake, add sauce until covered and serve. And they were absolutely delicious, as expected! I can’t explain how tasty they were! Meal kits are fab and while they are not quite the same as going to the restaurant, these were pretty close!
