I’m 42 years old, a busy mum of three boys, and a personal trainer. I’ve never worried too much about what I eat, but recently, I’ve been much more aware of my protein requirements and also, how much I’m falling behind of them. Until now. Enter, The Gym Kitchen.
When it comes to nourishing our bodies and making sure we’re getting the necessary nutrients, the juggling act between healthy and convenient is a common struggle. The Gym Kitchen—a company that’s muscled its way into the market with a focus on providing macro-counted, high-protein meals that don’t skimp on flavour – have solved this with several ranges including snacks, desserts, pizzas, chilled wraps, grains and lentils pouches and more. My saviour is the chilled range.
Time is a luxury I just don’t have. I wish I could be one of those people who batch-cooked healthy meals in advance or had an organised shopping list and meal plan at the ready. Believe me, I’ve tried. Having a stock of several Gym Kitchen meals in my fridge however provides reassurance and takes one item off my already heavy mental load.
Each meal costs between £2.50 – £3.75, depending on where you shop (they’re available from big retailers such as Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Co-Op, Morrisons and Ocado) and they’re filling. Segun, the owner, wanted to create meals which integrated into a fitness-focused lifestyle, but had none of the meal prep. As a result, they’re high in protein and low on calories. Plus, they don’t skimp on taste and have a range of favourites including Chicken Tikka, Green Chicken Curry, Piri Piri Chicken… yes, there’s a lot of chicken!
I recently tried their latest release, Chicken and Mushroom Fettucine, which for me was real comfort food without the calories or guilt. It came with broccoli which was perfectly al dente – there’s nothing like mushy broccoli to put you off a meal.
They also released a Chicken Paella which I was excited to try as I’m a big paella fan. But this didn’t hit the mark for me. I felt like there was too much sauce and it was a little over seasoned.
As someone who grew up on microwave meals as a teenager and into my twenties, even though these are warmed in the microwave, I can taste the difference; The Gym Kitchen versions feel more wholesome and fresher.
For those who are looking to improve their nutrition, but don’t have the time to make meals from fresh and need a helping hand, The Gym Kitchen’s chilled range are a great place to start. They’re healthy, but not bland or boring, and are easy and convenient. A win for me.
