I love a smoothie. Some blitzed up fruit and seeds is one of the easiest ways to get a few more nutrients into my diet (which can be a little heavy on the toast at times…I really like toast), they’re quick and I always feel virtuous when I grab a smoothie on the go rather than a sugary soda or coffee. I mean a quick glance on social media and it’s clear smoothies equal healthy…don’t they?
The reality might not be so clear cut. While smoothies can be a great source of fruit and veg (although one smoothie counts as just one of your five a day, irrespective of how much variety you pack in), fibre and depending on the recipe protein, they can also be packed with sugar. What’s more, these sugars are ‘free sugars’, which are the kind that we should aim to consume less of (no more than around 30g per day) to protect our teeth and maintain a healthy weight. In fact some shop bought smoothies contain more sugar than drinks that we’d normally think of as ‘unhealthy’ like cola or other fizzy drinks. What’s more, we often consume smoothies in quantities way above the 150ml recommended portion size, I know I’ll often tell myself that starting the day with a massive smoothie means I’m being super healthy, when in reality the amount of sugar I’m ingesting far outweighs the benefit of the fruit in my smoothie.
More smoothie, less sugar
So smoothies aren’t necessarily the healthy solution we often think they are, but that doesn’t mean we have to cut those delicious fruity drinks from our diets entirely. We all need more fruit and veg in our lives, and a smoothie can be a great way to pack in those lovely nutrients if we make sure we choose options that are lower in sugar and stick to the recommended serving size of 150ml, and that is where Innocent Super Smoothies Light come in.
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love an Innocent Smoothie. Not only are they delicious, but they’re also dead easy to pick up and enjoy in a hurry (seriously, the number of times I’ve nearly spilled one down myself running for a train…) when we need something slightly more nutritious than another Americano. Unfortunately though your average Innocent Smoothie is packed with those free sugars I mentioned earlier…until now. Innocent Super Smoothies Light are 30% lower in natural sugars while still offering lots of lovely fibre, vitamins and minerals and of course 1 of your 5 a day. This is Innocent’s lightest smoothie yet, and while sometimes you can feel a little hard done by with a ‘light’ version of an old favourite let me assure you that these smoothies still pack the same (if not more) delicious punch.
Available in two flavours, you can choose from a delicious Berry Light Smoothie with fresh strawberry, watermelon & other fruits flavour which is the perfect refresher on a warm day (please please let there be more warm days soon!) or a yummy Tropical Smoothie with pineapple, orange, guava and a little kick of turmeric just to keep things interesting. What’s more, these combos haven’t just been put together because they’re delicious (which they are), but also because they’re fruits that naturally contain less sugar, so nothing you can’t pronounce has been added to sweeten up your smoothie, it’s still all goodness. Just light goodness.
