Floatworks gives Londoners an hour to completely switch off, relax, and submerse themselves in the deeply healing waters of the i-sopod tanks, which are each filled with over 800 pounds of magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt). Floating helps alleviate stress, relieve aches and pains, reduce insomnia, anxiety, migraines and so much more. After one hour in the floatation pod, I can testify The Float Works!
One of my favourite ways to unwind, and re-set at the end of a long, tiring day, or exhausting workout, is to slip into a long hot bath, with a couple of handfuls of my trusty Epsom Salts, and feel the stress soak away. Needless to say, it didn’t take much persuasion to entice me to try out Floatworks in Vauxhall.
I arrived early on the Saturday morning for my 7am scheduled appointment. I was overtired from a hectic week’s work, lacking sleep from a somewhat over indulgent Friday night and to top it off I had DOMS. Delayed onset muscle stiffness, from a heavy weights session on Thursday. I felt pretty rubbish when I arrived!
After signing a disclaimer, I was given a tour of the calming Floatworks space and then shown to my i-sopod tank, positioned in the centre of a large room, which also has a changing area and shower to wash the salt out of your hair once you get out. With my instructions on what to do, and what to expect, I was keen to strip down and climb in.
Admittedly, whilst I love water, I did feel slightly nervous about pulling the lid down shut and lying in complete darkness, but the water was so warm and soothing once I climbed in, I was quickly enjoying the feeling of complete weightlessness. The hour passed quickly.
Immediately after immersing myself in the float pod I was astonished at how utterly different I felt. I felt positively buoyant. My aches and pains had gone, my head felt clear, my body felt refreshed, the stiffness in my legs and all tension in my body had disappeared. It was the most relaxed I had felt in months and the benefits lasted for days after the experience.
WHAT IS FLOATING?
Floatation therapy has been proven to have a profoundly positive impact on your health and wellbeing, helping your body and mind reach peak physical and mental performance. The benefits include recuperation, rejuvenation, injury rehabilitation, improved creativity and mental clarity.
Do you remember the 1980’s movie Cocoon? (spoiler alert if you haven’t) It’s about a group of elderly residents who find themselves energized with youthful vigor after swimming in a pool containing alien cocoons. Unbeknown to them, aliens have been using the swimming pool to store their brethren, giving the waters a powerful, rejuvenating quality. Floating is like submerging yourself in a fountain of youth!
It is a truly unique and restorative experience that will benefit your body and mind.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The i-sopod tanks contain over 800 pounds of magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt), which means that anybody, regardless of their size or shape, will float on the surface of the water. It is the high concentration of magnesium in the water, that promotes so many health benefits for the body and mind.

WHY SHOULD I FLOAT?
When was the last time you heard…nothing? It’s so hard to find peace and quiet in London. Our lives are hectic, schedules packed, and once home, we are still bombarded with noise pollution, from the constant hum of traffic, trains and sirens as well as the constant attachment to our smartphones, we rarely switch off.
Too much noise, can create tension and stress and even lead to high blood pressure in the event of prolonged exposure, according to a 2011 study by the World Health Organisation, so treating yourself to an hour of complete unadulterated silence in the safety of one of the i-sopod tanks at Floatworks, can be incredibly healing and nourishing for your body, mind and soul.
Silence, like privacy is a luxury. It helps refresh and regenerate your brain, regulate your emotions and reduce cortisol in the body, which all contributes to a more productive and positive you!
Floating helps you to explore your deeper consciousness. The experience is for the mind, the body and the soul, and so can provide a spiritual sense of wellbeing as well as physical. When in the tank, the warm water is soothing, and the feeling of weightlessness i.e. floating really lets you switch off. Physical ailments, like tense shoulders and lower back pain are dissipated and your mind has the opportunity to switch off, to process, to wander, which creates a space for mental clarity and creativity.
The benefits of floating are all encompassing, helping the body, mind and soul to enter a deeply relaxed state and in turn this helps it to achieve balance and optimal function. However other positive side effects of regular use include improved quality of your skin, muscles and nervous system. Floating in salt water allows the body and mind to experience deep relaxation and rejuvenation.
WHO CAN FLOAT?
Anyone can and will benefit from floatation therapy. Athlete’s use it to help them recover from injury and intensive training, business leaders use it to manage stress and find a state of mental clarity, expectant mothers use it to alleviate the aches and pains that come with pregnancy.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I left the floatation experience feeling energized, rejuvenated and with a spring in my step. I arrived feeling lackluster, absolutely exhausted and sleep deprived from a stressful week of work, so I can without a doubt say that the Float Works! My positive mentality and sense of clarity stayed with me for days after the immersion in the tank as well.
Floating really brings you back in line with yourself. Even though you are floating, the experience is quite grounding, and similar to the feeling you get after a really satisfying yoga class, when you leave feeling a little bit taller, so much calmer and wholly upbeat and ready to tackle the world again. No matter what is going on in your life, I guarantee you will leave the floatation experience, feeling a lot better than when you arrived!
